As with many other aspects of the restoration, a casual inspection of the E-Type's boot disclosed yet another area that required urgent attention. It was very dirty and covered in trim adhesive but the good news was that there was no rust. It was a dirty, uncomfortable task that took many days to complete but the final result was excellent.

This is what the spare wheel/fuel tank area looked like when everything was removed. Nothing serious, just a little surface rust and a couple of minor dings, but very dirty and in need of attention.

Most of the grotty mess was trim adhesive and years of accumulated dirt. Under that the original paint was still intact but "yellowed".

The mess was removed and the area taken back to bare metal using a small 100mm angle grinder with wire brush attachment and flap discs. The floor was solid and required no patches.

With the area thoroughly clean, straight and back to bare metal it was time for a repaint.

Two pack high build primer was applied to the bare metal and carefully sanded before the application of three top coats of two pack Old English White.

The fuel tank was completely stripped and rebuilt. The inside was cleaned and protected with POR15 Tank Repair, which seals the metal against rust. The outside was painted in two pack satin black.

The final step to finish off the area was to cut and glue sound deadening material over the exposed surfaces. This also protected the paint from damage by the spare wheel etc.
