The E-Type was very original, although in a rather dirty condition, and dismantling revealed that the subframes were very straight with no signs of damage, cracking or corrosion.
Photo Gallery - Subframe restoration
How it looked before the restoration started. Lots of surface rust and years of dirt and oil stains. This is the reason the whole project started.
The reason the subframes needed to be restored - grotty, faded, scratched and looking very sad.
This area was tarted up with "white bog" and black paint to hide the rusted bulkhead. Previous owner was less than honest!
Even at this stage it was not possible to tell how badly rusted the lower bulkhead panel was.
Many areas were showing the results of neglect and age and were in bad need of repainting. Luckily it was mostly just surface rust but left too much longer and serious rust would have been the result.
Subframes were completely dismantled, sandblasted and painted in two pack before being reassembled. They were straight with no cracks or damage.
Ready for the subframes to be refitted. Bulkhead and firewall area repaired and painted.
Subframes back in place and ready for the suspension etc
Compare this with before work began and you can see why this project was needed. Results are excellent.
A big improvement on the original. The replated original bolts enhance the quality of the finished product
No more rust and hidden holes!
New paint and replated bolts make a big difference.
Nice gloss and a finish better than the factory
If only the factory had taken this much care with the original build!
All of the subframe parts were easily assembled and fitted perfectly.
Everything in place and waiting for the engine installation.
Without the original photos it would be hard to believe how bad it was before work began.
